ALL ABOUT THERAPY

"Our job as therapists is to make it as safe as we can for people to meet their internal world." Bessel van der Kolk The Body Keeps Score

You've taken the first step and you've landed on my website looking into therapy. Perhaps you've seen a therapist before, perhaps not. Either way, I have deep respect for this process. Research shows us that the connection between therapist and client is the what makes or breaks therapy. If you don't feel comfortable with your therapist, you're not going to get as much out of it.

I believe therapy should be individualized, not a one size fits all. It's also my belief that therapy should be interactive and experiential. In other words, it's not about what your therapist can tell you as much as it is about what you can experience through the therapeutic process and relationship.

In my practice, my hope is that you experience acceptance and hospitality. Clients tend to be drawn to my warmth and compassion. I take great care to ensure the comfort of my clients.

The first phase of therapy is an assessment phase. During your first and possibly second appointment I will be gathering information and getting a general feel for your background and goals. This is also a really good time for us to ensure that the therapeutic relationship is a good fit. If it is not a good fit, I'm more than happy to refer you to another therapist who might be a better fit.

As we move into the treatment phase of therapy, sessions will be client directed (you get to decide what you want to work on). I employ many different methods of helping you heal your heart, mind and body and guiding you toward healing in your relationships. The specifics are really dependent on client need.

I utilize somatic (SE) therapeutic models as well as Internal Family Systems (parts work) and EMDR. In martial work I often utilize Gottman and Emotionally Focussed Therapy. My approach is often narrative and experiential in nature.

When clients desire, I will provide book recommendations pertaining to the topics they're working on. I do not assign a lot of time consuming homework. Instead, I ask clients to look for opportunities to put what they're learning in therapy into practice in every day situations.

Ultimately, I am oriented toward client's experiencing change. The evidence of effective therapy is improved quality of life and decrease of disruptive symptoms. My hope is that you feel better and can see changes in your relationships and emotions that help support your healing and journey.
